  • There can be an elegance to science illustrations. Clear and simple illustrated texts have long been inspiration for artists, the scientific community, outdoor enthusiasts and others. As technology evolved, scientific illustrations also evolved. The traditional illustrations now come as animated GIFS. In the graphic below, science illustrator and infographic designer Eleanor Lutz of Tabletop Whale has taken a close look at the wing movements of flying animals. She began with YouTube videos of each animal and then, “marked specific points on the wing throughout one wingbeat, and drew in curves that fit all 15 points in the wingbeat loop.” Lutz also illustrated an animated butterfly chart. She references that both of these projects lean towards decorative and artistic rather than scientific or educational. We’re glad that they’re a little bit of both sides.
